In the evolving landscape of blockchain technology, decentralization remains a core principle. It ensures resilience, security, and trustlessness. The Internet Computer Protocol (ICP), developed by the DFINITY Foundation, aims to build a truly decentralized internet. Recently, concerns have surfaced in the community about the concentration of node ownership, highlighting the need for greater transparency and independence among node providers.

Centralization Concerns

To address these concerns and strengthen decentralization, the DFINITY Foundation has taken several key steps.

First, node providers, the individuals or companies running the servers that power the network, must now clearly identify themselves. They are required to disclose who they are, where they operate, and confirm that their machines meet strict technical standards. They must also formally commit to honest conduct and accept full responsibility for any rule violations.

To support collaboration and raise standards, DFINITY has established a dedicated working group. This group allows node providers to share best practices, solve technical issues together, and find ways to strengthen and scale the network.

In addition, DFINITY is enforcing stronger rules to ensure node providers are truly independent. New questions in the official self-declaration process aim to uncover hidden connections, including:

  • Who owns the node provider (UBO, Ultimate Beneficial Owner)
  • Whether any owner is involved in other node providers
  • Whether owners of different node providers are related by family
  • Whether a company is part of a larger group linked to other providers
  • Whether the same entities are funding multiple node providers

These changes aim to increase transparency and prevent a small group from gaining excessive control. It is part of DFINITY’s broader effort to keep the Internet Computer decentralized, secure, and fair.

The Path Forward

The DFINITY Foundation is making deliberate moves to protect decentralization. By ensuring node providers are transparent and independent, the network can remain secure, equitable, and trustworthy.
